Why charity is necessary for Our  society

Every year on September 5, the world celebrates the International Day of Charity. This holiday established by the UN General Assembly in order to draw public attention to the activities of charitable organizations and individuals in the fight against various world problems. Among them are poverty, humanitarian crises, disease, environmental disasters, and much more.

Do I need to do charity work, how much should I donate to charity? How to help those who need it? Delicate and uncomfortable questions (why help those who will not be helped).

The date was not chosen by chance: on September 5, 1997, Mother Teresa, the world-famous missionary. The founder of the Order of Mercy, and the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, passed away. The essence of charity, at first glance, is clear and understandable – this is when you do something good for others, without expecting anything in return. At the same time, giving flowers to your girlfriend or helping your mother with cleaning is not charity, even if the action comes from a pure heart and is completely disinterested. One of the main components of charity is its impersonality. The goals of this activity go far beyond the interests of friends and family, it does not entail profit and is not dictated by orders from above. Despite this, there are a lot of people in the world who want to help others – but not everyone knows how to do it correctly.

Many are afraid to take the first step, and the reasons may vary. Some associate charity primarily with philanthropy and think: “I’m not rich enough to do this, this is the lot of billionaires.” Others are afraid of becoming a victim of scammers – unfortunately, on the Internet, there are often cases when, under the guise of those in need of help, scammers are hiding, cleverly playing on the feelings of compassionate people. Finally, many believe that they will not be able to volunteer, that they, like Mother Teresa, will have to put their whole lives on it and completely renounce their personal interests.

On International Charity Day, we tried to understand what charity is, what it is for, and how to do it correctly. And at the same time dispels the main myths about this area. Representatives of several charitable organizations helped us in this.

What kind of charity is there?

Frequently, when we talk about beneficent exercises, we think about the names of enormous business people and big shots like Henry Ford and Bill Gates. Having built their giant corporations and achieved immense success, they considered it their duty to share the fruits of their success with 

all of humanity: to help young scientists, send large sums to funds to fight incurable diseases, and open free schools. For example, Bill and Melinda Gates have spent over $ 28 billion on charitable causes over the years, Warren Buffett – over $ 25 billion. 

Facebook social network founder Mark Zuckerberg, although relatively recently built its capital, has already spent half a billion dollars to support educational projects in the United States. Indeed, the most “high-profile” acts of charity are associated with material support. 

This can be the transfer of food, water, clothing, medicine to people in need, or the transfer of an amount of money to the current account of a person struggling with a serious illness. Or the provision of any material benefits for the needs of other people (refugees, residents of countries in difficult economic situations, starving in Africa and Southeast Asia, etc.).

However, in the modern world, other forms of charity are also gaining importance. For example, disinterested and free performance of work and provision of services. This form of charity includes an ordinary subbotnik, a free consultation with a doctor. And the activities of volunteers who organize holidays in orphanages. These great deeds are generally not overpowering in scale. However, offer gigantic help to people and build a general degree of trust and altruism in the public arena.

 I run the risk of being a victim of scammers

Making a feasible donation for the benefit of a person, animal, or organization in need via the Internet is perhaps the simplest and most affordable type of charity today that almost everyone can afford. But where there is a simple scheme involving the transfer of funds, fraudsters are bound to arise. On social networks, you can see thousands of ads about fundraising for the treatment of children with cancer, costly surgeries for people after accidents, rescuing animals abandoned by their owners, etc. Unfortunately, not all of these ads are fake.

But this does not mean that it is necessary to completely abandon financial assistance to those in need. There are ways to help you spot scammers both online and in real life. Some of them shared with us by Yanna Serkova, public relations specialist at the Mukesh Adoption Center.

Let’s consider a specific situation. Suppose you want to help a shelter for homeless animals or a specific animal (raise funds for treatment, rehabilitation, help find owners, etc.). Instead of transferring money directly to the indicated accounts, do the following.

Express your desire to pick up the animal. False shelters have no interest in this, and the staff of the present will certainly ask you clarifying questions.

Say you want to volunteer. If the shelter denies such an opportunity, this should alert you, because any charitable organization always lacks hands.

Offer more than just money. Real shelters are happy to receive help with things – diapers, food, fillers, medicines, etc. Fraudsters have no very interest in this.

Study mentions and reviews of the shelter on the Internet and in the media. They may not be 100% positive, because it is impossible to please everyone. But the feedback from the new owners of shelter animals is always indicative.

If you see an ad about fundraising for the needs of some well-known shelter, but it is posted on a third-party site or on someone’s personal page. Then it is best to contact the shelter directly and clarify the correct details.

Check out the financial statements, or better not be too lazy to come and personally see the animal for which the collection is open. By the way, a real shelter should always be open to visitors, because its goal is to find new owners for the animals.

Often on trains or on the streets, we see people who pretend to be volunteers of an organization. They usually even have their own uniforms with the logo of the foundation or shelter. These are mainly young people who approach passers-by with small donation boxes. But don’t rush to put money in there, Yanna warns.

“Protects typically don’t gather cash in the city, in intersections, close to the metro, in electric trains, and so forth. When your every day is busy saving lives, treating, caring for pets, and adding them to new families. There is neither time nor free people to ride around the cities and beg for help, ”the girl explains.

The shelters periodically participate in charity fairs and exhibitions. Having arrived there, you can personally get acquainted with their representatives and wards. For example, the sphere of those who help animals is a fairly narrow circle where many people know each other. Therefore, there are no dubious outsiders in charities.
