How to Clean and Maintain a Doona

506views

Having the right bedding can do wonders for proper sleep. A doona, compared to a quilt, offers the perfect blend of breathability and comfortability and is guaranteed to give anyone a perfect night’s sleep. But sleep isn’t the issue here.

Taking proper care of bedding can ensure that it lasts forever and stays in pristine conditions for as long as it can. Before jumping into the specifics of taking care of a doona, here are some basic bedroom cleaning rituals that every Australian must follow through:

  1. Change the sheets regularly, at least once every week. Don’t be afraid to have extra beddings and linen on standby to ensure a seamless cleaning without wasting too much time.
  2. The quality of a good night’s sleep will ultimately depend on how well the pillows, doonas, sheets and other bedding materials are cleaned. So don’t be afraid to use detergents and softeners and maybe use hot water for the sheets to kill the bedbugs and the mites.
  3. Understand that the way of washing for feathered beddings and wool is completely different and may require different cycles or washing methods. Be thorough with the material and read up on how to properly wash them without making any unnecessary complications.

Regular cleaning and maintenance of beddings and sheets can help improve the overall sleep quality every night. Don’t be like most people who struggle with sleep owing to lack of the right bedding or a comfortable mattress.

Cleaning And Maintaining A Doona:

Most of the doonas available in the market can be machine washed, and it must be done regularly, at least once a month. Don’t forget to clean it before storing the bedding for the winter. Here’s a classification based on the materials:

  1. Cotton or Feather: Machine washing is okay as long as the entire bedding fits inside the washing machine. If the size is small, make sure that the bedding doesn’t squish into the space, as it won’t rinse very well if it does. Don’t be afraid to use detergents and softeners and set the temperature to a fairly higher level to kill the organisms residing inside. However, keep the machine set to delicate levels and don’t go all out on the highest settings.
  2. Wool: Woollen doonas need special care, and rightfully so, they don’t do well in hot water temperatures, cannot be put inside a spin cycle, and cannot be dried out in the sun. Although the most comfortable out of all the doonas, woollen material requires special care, and it is often better to let the expert cleaners handle it.

For those who don’t have a washing machine that’s large enough, a bathtub works just fine. Although, it does take a bit more effort to clean. Let it immerse, and then squeeze it out of the remaining water after the cleaning is done.

Hanging Them Dry: Aside from woollen doonas, the rest of the materials can be dried under the sun.

  1. Hang them in such a way that the air can get fully circulated and take away the extra moisture.
  2. Leave it under direct sunlight for a few hours and take it out a few times to give it a good shake. The shaking will allow the inner bedding materials to move around and let fresh air in.
  3. Once it’s completely dry, use a stick or a bat to beat the bedding.
  4. A dryer works as long as it’s big enough to accommodate a full bedding cover. Otherwise, it won’t dry as effectively.
