Ukraine has been celebrating its Own Independence Day for many years now, and on this day of Ukrainian Solidarity (or Patriotic Revival) many locals and foreign visitors alike are present. The main celebrations take place in the cities of Khmelnitsky and Kiev. Some other larger cities also commemorate the day with parades. Khmelnitsky: Khmelnitsky is a historically preserved city, dating back to the 7th century. On this day, you can go back in time and see how it was around that time. It is also a nice day to visit Khmelnitsky to see some of the beautiful monuments that are a part of the town’s heritage. There are plenty of tourist attractions there too such as the very popular Khmelnitsky Cathedral, which have a huge replica of a baroque cathedral, plus the Batata river!
Odessa: Odessa is a historic city, which has lots to offer tourists from all over the world. There are many monuments, and palaces to visit. It is also a great day out for those who love to shop! You can visit Saint Nicholas Cathedral, or spend some time looking through the antique markets. And don’t forget about drinking in a beer in one of the many Bars of Odessa! There is even a very good jazz bar in Odessa!
Lviv: Lviv is another historical city in Ukraine. Many of you may have heard of the Batkivshchyna river, which connected the two capitals of Kyiv and Lviv by way of the Volkhov-Karpi bridges. This bridge has since closed, but you still can view it from the old part of the city, or from the observation tower on the top of the Pecherskivsky metro. The day on which Lviv commemorates its independence from Soviet Union is the famous Lviv New Year.
Kharkov: The most important day of Lviv’s history is the Day of the Red Army mentioned by dayschecker. This was the main army of Lviv against the Nazis during the 1940’s. Kharkov was also the site of the biggest mass deportation of Jews during the whole period of the regime of terror. Today, the district still has a lot to offer. Lots of museums and galleries are on offer, as well as cultural shows and concerts.
Moscow: The third largest city of Russia is also on May Day. On this day, the entire city comes alive with celebration and joy. Many shops sell products at heavy discounts, while people go about carrying homemade bouquets of flowers, incense and other fragrant herbs. Some of the most popular dishes are cookies and ice cream, although people are very hungry!
