Whether you’re making the transition to eating a plant-based diet or you’re simply to trying to become more mindful about your diet, going on a detox can give you the ‘fresh-start’ feeling that can lead to a successful lifestyle change.

I can personally attest to this, as a detox helped me to jumpstart a nearly 50 pound weight loss.

When I was 19, I found myself at my heaviest weight and also my unhappiest self. I decided that enough was enough and I needed to take my health and happiness into my own hands. How did I do this? Well it started with a New Year’s resolution to adopt a healthier lifestyle in the pursuit of my happier self.

During 15 days I was able to lose 15 pounds.

Although it took me nearly 18 months of healthy eating and hard work at the gym to drop the full 50 pounds, the first step I took was to dive into a detox. My results? During 15 days I was able to lose 15 pounds.

Now, my results are singular to my body and lifestyle, but I honestly believe that if it wasn’t for a detox I would have never been able to drop the full 50!

Every single one of the 50 pounds was very tough to lose, but during my 15 days of detoxing I learned a lot about myself and what I had been putting into my body.

I used my time spent detoxing to focus on what my weakness were. I found myself missing sugar the most. During my time detoxing from the refined sugar that is shamelessly put into so many processed foods, I realised that I was addicted to the comfort and the feeling of ‘instant gratification’ that sugary foods provided me with.

Anyone can use a detox this way and therefore gain an increased mindfulness of your body’s reaction to certain foods.

For example, you may find out how much you miss your morning coffee. Is that a caffeine addiction?

Perhaps missing your afternoon snack makes you realise how much you crave sugar -as I did!

These realisations will only benefit you in the future by encouraging healthier choices.

The Right Way to Detox
Is a detox for everyone? The short answer is, no. People with medical conditions that require a certain diet may not be suitable to detox. When in doubt, consult your GP or a medical health professional who is familiar with your health history and is able to advise you.

My GP encouraged me to take it easy during my time detoxing and keep physical activity to a minimum during the first couple of days. After three days, I found that I was feeling better than ever! Originally, I had planned to only detox for only one week. However the overall feeling of wellness that I had gained in a short time inspired me to extend it; and you may discover the same.

After completing my detox, I pursued a plant-based lifestyle which played a huge part in helping me to achieve my wellbeing goals. Before detoxing I would have imagined being motivated enough to give up animal products, but now I can’t imagine going back to my unhealthy diet.

Although weight-loss is one benefit of a detox, remember that an overall sense of wellbeing is the most important part and your health should never be compromised.
