Other Categories of Liquid Flow Meters 

  • Differential Pressure Flow Meters

In this type of flow meter, the flow rate is determined by Bernoulli’s equation. When fluids flow through the pipe, these flowmeters cause construction inside the pipe. This causes pressure drop inside the meter. The pressure drop will increase as the flow increases. The flow rate is provided by a transmitter that measures the differential pressure from the impulse piping within the flow meter. These flow meters are the most commonly used flowmeters accounting for 21% of the world’s market for flow meters. Differential pressure flow meters are waste, oil, gas, power, mining, and many other industries. 

  • Positive Displacement Flow Meters

PD are also called mechanical flow meters. These flow meters measure flow rate in volume by delivering the measured potion and refilling it again. The amount of fluid is then calculated. These are the only kinds of flow meters that directly measure the flow rate of fluids, while other flow meters convert other measured parameters into flow rate. 

The fluid volume that goes through the pipe is directly proportional to the flow meter’s output. A system is needed to constantly fill and empty the buckets without leaving the pipe. PDs have high accuracy levels and are preferred in transporting oil or fluids like gasoline, hydraulic fluids, water, and various gas applications.

  • Mass Flow Meters

Mass flow meters are also known as inertial flow meters. They measure the flow rate of fluids that go through tubes. Most mass-related processes use mass flowmeters because they measure force coming from the speeding mass of fluid. The two most commonly used mass flow meters include the thermal dispersion flow meter and the Coriolis mass meter. Coriolis flowmeters have high accuracy regardless of which liquid is being measured. Mass flow meters are commonly used in industries such as pharmaceuticals, wastewater, mining, and power.
