Is Your Water Softener Full of Water? – Here’s How to Drain It
You can drain the brine tank of your water softener using a few different methods. Among them are:
1. USE A BUCKET:
By hand, remove all the water in the softener. After you fix the problem, if the water is still relatively clean. You can scoop it into a large container or your laundry tub so that you can use it again.
2. USE A WET-DRY VACUUM:
Wet-dry vacuums, also known as shop-vacs, can easily and conveniently suck out the water inside your water softener brine tank if you don’t like scooping it out by hand.
Wet-dry shop vacuums are specially designed to pick up wet as well as dry items. It’s important that you use a shop vac that works for wet as well as dry applications.
3. DUMP THE WATER:
It is not harmful to the environment to dump the water out of your water softener down a drain. The brine well must be removed first. Within your brine tank, this is the long cylinder that holds the safety float.
You can do this by taking out the float inside the tube and then removing the overflow elbow, if your unit has one. Pull out the cylinder last.
If you have a side-by-side water softener, you will also need to disconnect the fill tube that connects the brine tank to the head valve and its overflow hose.
4. MANUAL REGENERATION CYCLE:
By pressing and holding the “regenerate” button on your water softener, you can activate a manual regeneration cycle to empty a water softener full of water.
Your water softener automatically pulls all the water from the brine tank during regeneration, so you can remove the water by activating this cycle. When the regeneration cycle begins, make sure you press the button a second time to skip the brine cycle.
After your tank is empty, you can push the button to skip all of the other cycles and bring your water softener back to normal.
The method will only work if your water softener’s regeneration is functioning properly. If it is not, then you will need to drain the water from your unit using one of the first three methods.
WHAT COULD HAPPEN IF YOUR WATER SOFTENER DOESN’T DRAIN PROPERLY
A water softener full of water will not work properly.
During the regeneration cycle, if your softener is not fully draining. The brine tank will eventually fill up with water until the safety float is engaged.
You won’t be able to regenerate your softener because your brine solution will become too diluted. You will therefore have hard water.
COMMON CAUSES OF A WATER SOFTENER FULL OF WATER
Water softeners filled with water are caused for a number of reasons. Among them are:
- A kinked, clogged, or leaky brine drain on your softener may require repair. You can hire a professional to handle this for you.
- Your brine line isn’t properly connected to your brine tank and into the float: If your brine line isn’t properly connected to your float, water flows directly into your tank and the float will not shut it off.
- When your drain line flow control is clogged, it cannot regulate the amount of water flowing through your system. Clogs must be removed.
- The brine line flow control is clogged: If this becomes clogged, it will not be able to drain brine from the tank.
- You may have a salt clog at the bottom of your brine tank. A salt clog will prevent the flow of water.
- Your safety float may be sticking: If it is stuck, it needs to be cleaned in order to once again shut off the flow of water into your tank.
- Your injector is clogged: In this case, your injector will not be able to generate the suction necessary to remove water from your tank.
