Lawyers CPD requirements
The Hearsay: The legal podcast, has recently made changes to the lawyers CPD requirements, bringing them closer together. Now, a lawyer can submit his/her CPD records electronically. All practicing members of the Society must complete ten (10) CPD units each year. Within those ten (10) units lawyers must include at least one (1) CPD unit every CLE year in each of the following compulsory fields:
- Ethics and professional responsibility
- Practice management and business skills
- Professional skills
- Substantive law
In addition, a lawyer may claim up to two hours of self-study as part of their CPD requirements. The Society has recommended that lawyers take between 50 and 60 hours of self-study annually.
CPD requirements of the New South Wales (NSW) Law Society
If you want to comply with the CPD requirements of the New South Wales (NSW) Law Society, it is crucial to meet the deadline. Solicitors and registered lawyers are required to complete 10 units of CPD per year. However, newly qualified solicitors and RELs are only required to complete one hour of CPD training per month. It is also important to remember that barristers must submit their CPD records to the Bar Association to maintain their membership.

Law Society requirements
The Law Society also requires lawyers to meet CPD requirements by completing certain educational activities. This includes participating in seminars and continuing legal education courses. The CPD requirements are regularly updated and must be reviewed to ensure compliance. To keep their certification up to date, members must attend a minimum of three seminars per year. The Australian Bar Association also requires members of the profession to complete eight hours of CPD every year.
