How to perform Umrah?

Many of you will either have loved one’s making Umrah this year or will be fortunate enough to travel yourselves. The most important concern we have for this journey is, of course, whether my Umrah will be accepted. With this in mind, we’ve compiled all the Umrah guidelines into a short handbook to help you fulfill your spiritual requirement properly. In addition, decently affordable Umrah Packages are available for the citizens of the UK on Almuslim Travels.

The four pillars of Umrah are:

Before the Miqat, you change into Ihram clothing, conduct two Rakahs of Salah, and make your Niyyah as the Miqat approaches, following which you recite the Talbiyah repeatedly. Second, Tawaf al-Umrah of the Kaaba is performed, followed by two Rakahs of Salah, preferably near Maqam Ibrahim. Finally, you perform the Sa’i of Safa and Marwah. Finally, you must shave (Halq) or shorten (Taqsir) your hair in order to exit Ihram and finish your Umrah. All of this is compiled in the complete tour guide of Almuslim Travels. Perform the best Umrah of your life with us with our easy and cost-friendly Umrah Packages.

The first step is Ihram

Ihram will begin on the plane at a location outside of Makkah if you are going into Makkah. An announcement will be made approximately an hour and a half before you enter Makkah, and you will be told. Meeqats are the places where Ihram first begins.

Steps to follow while entering Ihram:

  • Cleaning your body (hair removal, nail clipping, mustache trimming, showering) is advised. This can be done before taking off.
  • Wear Ihram clothing after doing one of the five daily prayers, if possible (see diagram below for dress code).
  • Decide to perform the Umrah.
  • Say Allahumma labbayka ‘Umrah in Arabic.
  • The Talbiyah should be recited.
  • You must either quit Makkah and re-enter it or sacrifice a sheep as a penalty if you forget to enter Ihram at the Meeqat.

Both men and women must adhere to the following Ihram rules:

  • Do not argue or fight with others.
  • Do not curse, speak in an immoral manner, or use any foul words.
  • Do not wear any perfume. This includes scented soaps, shampoos, wipes, lotions, and other similar products.
  • Hair and nails should not be trimmed, plucked, or removed. (It is possible to remove broken nails.)
  • No sexual behavior is permitted.
  • No animals should be killed, hunted, or assisted in hunting.
  • Do not marry, propose to others, or assist others in marrying.

To summarise, you have crossed the Meeqat, declared your intention to begin Hajj, and entered the state of Ihram. The Ihram is a state of thought, and certain things that would normally be halal for you are now haram, just as they are when you begin praying or fasting. It’s critical that you keep this mindset as you move forward with the next phases.

Performing Tawaf is the second step

Tawaf – the ritual of circulating the Kaaba seven times on Hajj and Umrah.

Before beginning the Tawaf, make the following preparations:

  • You’ll need wudu. (Women who are menstruating cannot perform Tawaf.)

It is customary for men to wear their Ihrams such that their right shoulder is exposed. This is referred to as Idtiba’a. After completing their Tawaf, men must cover their shoulders once more (i.e. after seven tawafs).

What is the method for performing Tawaf?

  • Begin your journey at the Black Stone. At the Black Stone, recite this dua.
  • You have the option of kissing the Black Stone, touching it and then kissing your hand, or simply pointing to it without kissing your hand.
  • From the Black Stone, make your way to the Yamaani corner. No other part of the Kaaba should be touched. You are free to make any du’a you choose.
  • If you get close enough to the Yamani corner, you can touch it, but don’t kiss it or kiss your hand.
  • Continue your tawaf while reciting this du’a of Tawaf, looping back to the Black Stone.
  • Your first tawaf concludes at the Black Stone, where you started. Continue with your second tawaf, following the same steps as before.

Isn’t it simple? A few more points to consider:

  • Do not enter the Hateem. If you enter the Hateem, that tawaf will not be counted, and you will have to repeat it.
  • Men should only jog slowly for the first three tawafs. This is known as Ramal.
  • All seven tawafs require women to walk normally. In the last four tawafs, men should walk normally.

The tour guides you will get with our Umrah Packages will give you a complete overview of every detail.

After Tawaf being the third step:

Tawaf Al-Ifadah is the name of the Tawaf you are undertaking, and to complete it, you must pray at Maqam Ibrahim and drink Zamzam water. The steps are:

What are your responsibilities at Maqam Ibrahim?

  • Proceed to Maqam Ibrahim after completing Tawaf and reciting the above ayah.
  • Place yourself between the Maqam Ibrahim and the Kaaba. It will be way too crowded if you try to stand immediately in front of it. As long as the Maqam is between you and the Kaaba, anywhere in Al-Masjid Al-Haram is fine.
  • Pray a total of two rakats. In the first Rakat, recite Surah Kafiroon, and in the second Rakat, recite Surah Ikhlas (after Surah Fatihah, of course).

What should you do when you’ve finished worshipping at Maqam Ibrahim?

With Umrah Packages from Almuslim Travels, your guides will practically take you through each step:

  • Any Zamzam water point will suffice.
  • While standing, drink Zamzam water. It’s also a good idea to pour the water over your head.
  • While drinking Zamzam, recite this du’a.
  • You must now depart from Al-Masjid Al-Haram for Sa’ee, so recite the du’a for leaving the masjid.

Although this appears to be a lot to learn, once you’ve memorized the procedures, they’re actually quite straightforward. To summarise, you entered the state of Ihram earlier. You’ve completed seven circles around the Kaaba while doing du’a, prayed two Rakat, and drank Zamzam water.

Sa’ee is the fourth step.

How would you go about practicing Sa’ee?

  • It is suggested, but not required, to use wudu. Women who are menstruating should perform Sa’ee.
  • You may recite this ayah about Safa and Marwah on your way to Sa’ee.
  • Begin your Sa’ee journey in Safa.
  • Between the hills of Safa and Marwah, you must complete seven rounds. Walking from Safa to Marwa counts as one round, and walking from Marwah to Safa counts as another.
  • Men only have to run a portion of the distance. Green tube lights clearly demarcate this region.
  • Recite this du’a (similar to the Eid takbeer) three times at the top of each hill. After that, you can make personal du’as.

That’s all there is to it! After seven rounds, Sa’ee will be done, and you will arrive at Marwah. You’ve completed your Umrah now.

Step 5: Bringing Ihram to a closure

How do you put an end to Ihram? For men, this entails shaving or cutting their beards and changing from Ihram to regular clothing. For ladies, this entails trimming their hair to the tip of their fingers. The state of Ihram is then ended, and the Ihram laws are lifted.

Umrah is one of the most major factors of Islamic religion, Allah Almighty has blessed your soul by making you eligible of performing this holy ritual.
